Body & Spine Align – Summer Newsletter 2012 #1

Summer Newsletter 2012

2012 has got off the a rapid start. New Year’s Resolutions come and go, but the most popular ones are to “lose weight” and “get fit”, followed by “stop smoking”.

I am asked so often What is the best way to lose weight?” that it has prompted me to write this article. Summer is in full swing so the pool and beach are calling. Unfortunately, once we strip down to the bare essentials, all our little excesses show up in full glory. Fat thighs, belly and hips, and lately the “back boobs”. Oh dear!

I have started with Weight loss tips and then go into more detail further into the article.

Tots go off to  Prep-school

Many little ones have gone off to prep school for the first time while their parents tried to contain hopes and fears for their little treasures. I hope all those mums, dads  and grandparents too, who were excited and worried are now starting to settle down as the Tots get into a routine for prep school each day.Congratulations to all the tots for making this huge transition. Well done!

How quickly they grow up. I can still remember my boy’s first day at kindy and school. That was 23 years ago.

Bride Starts to Laugh, and Laugh

Big Love, Low Budget  Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is meant to give you an opportunity to express your love for another. True love doesn’t need expensive gifts or outrageous pranks. There are lots of Low Budget, Big Love ways to demonstrate your feelings.

Photo Montage

Remember all those romantic and fun times together with a Photo Montage on a huge card that can be mounted on a wall or notice board. Another idea is to create a small photo album with snaps that warm your heart and bring a smile to your face.

Create a video from photos

A bit of excitement can be easily created in a short video with Animoto.com. You can make a stunning 30 second video complete with different fades in and out, music and captions for FREE. Or for the princely sum of  $5 you have a bigger variety of themes and your video can last for up to 5 minutes. It is super simple to use with digital photos and short 5 second video bites. Then it can be emailed or posted on Facebook. Big Love all round.

Plan a Romantic Picnic

Plan your itinerary to a beautiful park or garden, waterfall, lookout with picnic spot or somewhere in the world that delights your partner. Pack a sumptuous salad, a couple of treats (what about the 1,2,3,4 muffins? So quick and easy), sparkling water, thermos of tea or coffee, camera and picnic rug and head to your little piece of paradise.

Breakfast in bed

I don’t know about you, but there is something quite decadent about having breakfast in bed. Especially if it has been prepared by that special someone.

Candle lit dinner

It doesn’t have to be expensive, just prepared with love and care. You are sure to be appreciated for your efforts.

VibroGym – change of days

Body & Spine Align – VibroGym sessions are buzzing (pardon the pun). Since resuming gym sessions in January, both morning and afternoon sessions are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with a day of rest between each session for recovery. The new program seems to be working very well for everyone. Session times are filling so if you are interested in coming for your FREE trial, please book your time to experience to amazing benefits to your core strength, flexibility and posture, happen easily with VibroGym.

The Vibrogym has been a great addition to my busy work schedule, it’s only 20 mins. So easy to schedule into my day, and I like that I have my regular appointments booked, so I am accountable for coming (I too easily decide not to go to a gym coz no-one is expecting me).

I have changed my shape since coming as well, and everyone is noticing how trim I look. The best thing is that I don’t have to slog it out at the gym to get the results…the exercises feel strong but safe.  Vicki is a great guide and ensures my technique is good.

I also like the little things, like the great herbal tea mixes that we get in the mornings, and fresh filtered water to take home…nice little touches to help us stay healthy”

Nikki

Body & Spine Align Christmas News 2011 #4

Seasons Greetings

Can you believe that Christmas is only a week away? This year has flown by so quickly that even the children are complaining that they don’t have enough time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for supporting Body & Spine Align throughout the past year. My purpose is to bring health, healing and life balance to as many people as possible. With your help that dream is being realised. I hope I have made it easier for you to realise some of your dreams too.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

A curious cat takes a bath unexpectedly. Only a short Video. Hope you enjoy it.

The New VibroGym Studio

The main reason for moving to 78 Macrossan Avenue was to accommodate the VibroGym studio. There is a quaint garage in the back yard that is perfect for the Vibrogym studio. It has lots of natural light, a great view of the garden and chickens, high ceilings and air-conditioning for those stiflingly hot days. Not that we have had many so far. There is room for another Vibrogym machine when the need arises.

It is a great space so the transition has been a great success.

Every morning, as everyone finished their workout routine, we have a refreshing cup of tea made with superb quality teas supplied by a local company Tour De Tea. The all time favourites are Panjabi Chai, Genmaecha, Raspberry Vanilla Rooibos.

6 ways to stay fit this Christmas

Get outdoors

People who exercise outdoors are more likely to stick to a program. It can get hot, so early mornings and late afternoons are ideal for getting a bit of exercise outdoors.

  1. Take the kids to the park with a Frisbee, kite or ball and get active with them.
  2. Go bush with the dog and get some varied terrain. Nature always turns on a good show.
  3. Try a bike ride. Brisbane has so many bike tracks now and many of them are picturesque
  4. Get wet and paddle a bit. Swimming, paddling a canoe or raft can be a lot of fun

Drink Up

Yes you read right. Drink up… at least 2 litres of filtered water every day, especially if you are out and about. Marginal dehydration slows your metabolism. So by staying well hydrated you will be burning fat. Water also satisfies hunger pangs.

  • Have a large glass of water 20-30 minutes before eating.
  • Avoid drinking water with your meal as it dilutes the stomach acid and makes your digestion sluggish.
  • Adding the juice of ½ a lemon or lemon oil to your water will help detox your system and keep everything moving well, which helps weight loss. It is also much more refreshing than plain water.

Size Matters

Studies show that we are putting more on our plates each meal. This may be one reason we are becoming an obese nation. Size Does matter. Try using a smaller plate and smaller eating utensils to encourage you to eat smaller meals.  For example, try a teaspoon for soup and desserts. They will make the pleasure and flavour of the treat last twice as long.

Keep Moving

When you are with friends and family, keep your body moving. Dancing, singing, clapping hands and even laughing will all burn calories and send happy thoughts to your brain that creates endorphins (the happy hormone). Endorphins help us stay young and healthy. And its loads more fun than sitting and listening to Uncle Bob’s jokes again.

Go for colour

We are very fortunate that we have such a large variety of foods to choose from. When you are roaming the buffet go for colourful food. Not the artificial coloured type. Colourful foods are full of antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals that fight free radicals. Free radicals are created when we eat too much sugar, starch and alcohol. I know none of you will be doing that.

Pile your plate with green salads, bright fruits and vegetables. See how many colours your can eat in one meal. If you eat 80% colour you will be doing your metabolism a favour. Colourful food is usually rich in fibre too so it keeps you feeling satisfied for longer.

Supplement with good oils

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are known to reduce bad behaviour by 34% in prisoners. Amazing hey? Omega-3 oils reduce inflammation like gout, arthritis, asthma and eczema. All of which can play havoc with your fun at this time of year. It is also linked to reducing depression and stress and improving memory. So start now and get a good daily dose into you, your spouse and the children so you all have a happy holiday season.

Holiday Closure

This year I will be taking a longer break than usual over the Christmas period to catch up with friends and family from out of town. Therefore the practice will be closed from 6pm Friday 23rd December until 6am Monday 9th January 2012.

If you get into strife during that time please feel free to call 0429030111 and leave a message with my message service and I will return your call as soon as I am available. Many problems can be addressed over the phone.

The joy of giving and receiving

The tradition at this time of year is to give. We give our time as well as gifts.

We are a very affluent society and most of us have more than we need. This makes gift giving expensive and difficult.

If you would like to do something different and give a sustainable gift, you could consider giving a goat, duck, chicken or lamb through www.oxfamunwrapped.com.au. It costs $39.00 to give a sustainable gift to a village or family where it will be really appreciated.

Another option is www.kiva.org , an organization that allows people to lend money via the Internet to micro finance institutions and individuals to start profitable projects. It only costs $25 and the money gets repaid to you. It can then be reinvested in other projects that you like. You choose the person or project where your money is lent and you can watch the progress of their venture and repayment plan.

Stay Sun Safe

Even with the overcast weather it is easy to get sunburnt in summer in Australia. Be sensible and stay out of the midday sun. Limit your time of exposure and cover up. Hats and sunnies make life much more comfortable too.

Stay safe on the roads and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

Season’s Greetings

Thank you once again for a wonderful year. I look forward to being of service to you and your family in the New Year.

Summer Newsletter #4 2011

Summer Newsletter #4

It is only 1 month to Christmas

Where has the year gone? It is the time of year we catch up with loved and dear ones.  There is so much to do and social life seems to be over the top at times. Rushing from one event to another.

A few years ago, members of my family were all feeling the stress of Christmas so we decided to have a ‘no present policy’ as we have more things than we need.  t reduced the shopping and financial stress we can sometimes feel at this time of year.

Instead we pledge to spend time together at Christmas time. It is the one thing we don’t get enough of as we are separated by miles and time commitments. We plan to have a day together. That is a real GIFT!

The Joy of Giving

Some people are just plain difficult to buy gifts for. If you have some of those in your life and you want to give them something special – consider a Gift Certificate. For as little as $30 you can share the joy of good health and possibly make a huge difference to someone else’s life.

Body & Spine Align Gift Certificates are available to suit your gift giving needs. Call Vicki on 0429030111 to discuss options available with Ortho-Bionomy and VibroGym sessions.

Closing times for Christmas holidays

The practice will be closed from Friday the 23rd of December and reopening on Monday the 9th of January.

If you happen to get into difficulty during this time, please feel free to call the usual number 0429030111 and leave a message with my loyal message service.  I will return your call as soon as I can.

Many times we can sort things out over the phone, especially if you have been a client for a little while and you have a few ‘tools’ to use. I have guided many clients during times of trouble over the phone. Hopefully you will have a safe and happy time and not need my services at all.

Summer is here

It’s that time of year! The stone fruits and mangoes are in plentiful supplies, the nights are warming up, there are lots of advertisements for things to buy, Christmas carols are playing in all the shopping centres, the roads to the coast are crowded on the weekends and now we have a state election looming too.

Christmas and the Festive Season bring their own set of stresses. Too many places to go and people to please as well as shopping for presents and parties.

Our lives are very busy these days with many families having both parents working and kids in child care or juggling the school run and other commitments too. This can lead to a heightened sense of stress taking over your life.

Can you avoid Weight Gain with diet drinks?

Christmas holidays is a time when weight gain is on every body’s hips. Some may think that turning to diet drinks and mixers will prevent them from putting on extra centimeters.

A study over 9.5 years found that 70% of people that drank diet soda gained 70% more waist circumference than those who didn’t drink diet soda.

Artificial sweeteners were originally designed as pesticides and then were discovered to be sweet. They are also  known to cause weight gain in laboratory rats. ‘This article may enlighten you a bit more.

My suggestion- drink filtered water and feel the difference.

Good health and digestive enzymes

The tendency to over eat at festive times can cause a heavy load for our digestive systems.

Digestive enzymes are proteins produced by the body to break down foods (specifically proteins, carbohydrates and fats) for absorption. They are produced naturally in the mouth, stomach and pancreas.

After years of digestive trouble from an undiagnosed food allergy, I decided to try some digestive enzymes called Terrazyme. One of the main differences is the amount of centimetres I have lost from my waist and hips in the last 3 months. I have put this down to the introduction of digestive enzymes -TerraZyme into my supplementation regime.

The easiest way to control weight gain

Add soluble fibre to your diet…. This can be as simple as including more fresh vegetables and fruits- preferably raw- to each meal. Another option is to add a dessertspoon of psyllium husks to a pure fruit juice at snack times or after dinner. Psyllium is also noted for reducing cholesterol levels too. Better still it doesn’t have any known side effects.

Fibre is Fab because it

  • Helps you feel full
  • Reduces the absorption of dietary fats
  • Reduces serum cholesterol levels
  • Increases short chain fatty acid production – good for intestinal health
  • Prevents constipation and reduce diarrhoea

All good reasons to add some fibre to your diet today

The holiday season can be stressful

What are the signs of stress?

Every person responds to stress differently. Events that stress someone may not be an issue for someone else. Knowing your body and how it responds is the key to being to intervene and bring back balance.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) lists the signs of stress as

  • Headaches
  • Feeling sick or tired
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Problems sleeping
  • Lack of concentration and loss of interest in things usually enjoyed
  • Feeling overwhelmed and helpless
  • Feeling nervous, anxious, worried or ‘butterflies’ in the stomach
  • Becoming easily upset or angry
  • Feeling tense, sore neck or back muscles
  • Increased use of alcohol and other drugs

What can you do to reduce stress?

We usually learn our stress coping strategies by watching our parents. That may or may not be useful to you right now. If your parents had good strategies to manage during stressful periods, it is likely that you will adopt some of them and manage pretty well. If you happen to come from a family that got uptight during stressful times then some professional help may be useful from time to time.

Watch what you say to yourself

Behind every conversation there is another conversation that goes on in your own head. When you notice your own negative comments, it may be time to begin to find your positive attributes and attitudes and write them down on a piece of paper to remind yourself of the wonderful ways you contribute to the lives of those around you. Remember – WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT WILL BE MAGNIFIED.

Social network

People with friends that they can trust to be honest and open are valuable, but especially when you feel stressed. They can help you see another point of view and put things back in perspective.

Relaxation

Take 10 slow deep breaths every hour or as often as you need. Deep breathing eliminates a lot of stress so easily. Find things that you enjoy doing and begin participating. Dancing, swimming, running, bush walking or doing your favourite hobby can make a huge difference.

Meditation has been found to have significant improvements in mental states and emotional well-being.One of the American Focused meditationPresidents said ” I need to meditate for an hour each day. And when I am very busy I need to meditate for 2 hours each day” Meditation can be as easy as finding 20 minutes and shutting out the activities of the day. Focus on one thought and dismiss all others that come into your mind for that time.

Get active

There is a ton of research that demonstrates that physical activity reduces stress hormones and improves mental attitude. Those who go outside for their exercise seem to get an extra benefit. So make a date with nature and go for a walk, go to the gym or play sport. Keep ACTIVE and have FUN.

Find Balance in your life

We are so busy these days that often we forget our social, family, emotional and spiritual needs. If you are not spending at least 4 hours a week with people you enjoy and those who support you, then your life is out of balance. Make some time to spend quality time with friends and family.

Get a handle on anger

Anger well expressed, is directed to the right person, at the right time, in the right intensity, for the right reasons. Pent up anger is destructive to your health and relationships.  Find outlets to express your frustrations by writing, painting, stomping your feet, screaming into or punching  a pillow, running or talking it out with someone with a clear head.

Locate the cause of your stress

Where is the stress coming from? Identify it and begin to take steps to make some changes or learn new ways of coping . Trying to ignore it or using alcohol or other drugs will not make it go away and often increases the stress load.

Take control of what you can change

It is important to accept that you cannot control another person, place or thing.  The only situation you have complete control over is YOU. So it is a good idea to begin there.

As Gandhi said “Be the change you wish to see in the world…”

A Reminder -The clinic has moved

Body & Spine Align is now located at 78 Macrossan Ave, Norman Park.

Much easier to find at the top of the rise as you drive from Norman Park Station. The blue and white sandwich board on the footpath is a handy landmark.

Easy parking for 2 cars in the front yard and plenty of street parking too.

It is very convenient for those who use public transport. Only a 15 minute stroll from Norman Park rail station and 5 minutes from the nearest bus stop at Katherine Street in MacIllraith Ave on the 210 bus route. If you don’t mind a slightly longer walk (about 10 minutes) the 212 and 215 buses stop is in Bennetts Road.

I look forward to being of service to you at the new address.

Merry Christmas to you all

I wish you all a joyful and safe time this Christmas and New Year.

I want to express my gratitude to all who have supported Body & Spine Align over the last year. It gives me great pleasure to be able to assist you, your friends and family to wellness. A special thank you to all who have referred loved ones and friends to me for treatment. I appreciate the trust you show in my practice and the gentle methods used here. I look forward to another wonderful year in 2012.

Blessings to you and your family

Stay Young! Avoid Exercise Casualties

The challenge of getting fit for the warm months often leads us into overdoing things before our bodies are ready.

This week I’ve treated a couple of injuries that are a direct result of not warming up and stretching properly before undertaking strenuous exercise.

Our bodies work best when we have a combination of strength and flexibility. When you have neither it is a recipe for disaster.

No matter what level of fitness you presently have,  invest some time each day in doing basic stretches. If you work in an office your chances of injury are increased. The Australian Government was so concerned about it they published a large document on the subject.  Here is a link to the complete document

‘The Dream Machine and Pelvic Floor Muscles’

About 6 months ago I invested in a VibroGym to increase my muscle tone and fitness. It quickly became obvious that nearly everyone could benefit from the VibroGym too.

At the Mind Body Spirit Festival, it’s ability to reduce pain and stiffness in only 5 minutes was astounding, to say the least. I was amazed at the  relief it gave people with serious pain issues.

Some people call it the “Dream Machine” as it is so easy to use and the results are dramatic. It is the ideal training method for busy people or those with limited strength and movement. It even repairs torn tendons!!

I have been amazed at the VibroGym’s ability to strengthen core and postural muscles within a couple of weeks. Pelvic Floor exercises can be tedious, but with the VibroGym they tone up quickly and easily.

The  thing that excites me, is to see people who claim to have either no pelvic floor muscles or no sense of their pelvic floor and core muscles get a HUGE wake up after just a few minutes on the VibroGym.

Do yourself a favour and book in for your FREE trial today and see for yourself.

Welcome to Winter

We are truly blessed to be living in this wonderful city. Warm winter days and cool to cold nights. Great weather for warm soups and stews to enjoy their nourishing goodness. Not to forget a hot chocolate at bed time.

We have just passed the full moon and lunar eclipse on July 16 and 17th. I was fortunate enough to glimpse the moon on Sunday night as I drove home from the Sunshine Coast. It rose like a golden globe from the sea and was magnificent. As a child we saw the full moon rising in the east as we did our nightly chore of washing up. These early memories have been powerful in creating a deep fondness for the moon and her cycles.

Quick Health Tip

It’s as easy as A B C D E.

A – eat an apple a day (preferable organic and unwaxed) full of fibre and antioxidants ( more than twice the amount in a cup of green tea or serve of blueberries)

B - breathe deeply at least hourly X 10 breaths. We talked about the wonderful effects on all your organs and brain functions last month.

C - chew your food well. Gandhi said “eat your water and drink your food” . In other words, chew your food until it becomes a liquid. You will get all the nutrition and your saliva will get a chance to emulsify your food before it hits your stomach.

Ddrink more water. At least 2 litres per day and filtered if you can. Chlorine and fluoride kill off your fragile and essential gut flora. Without them illness ill surely follow.

E - exercise daily for 30 minutes. It increases your circulation and metabolism and generally makes you feel better. It is a great way to clear your head. If you walk home form the bus or train station you will know how valuable that little time outside in the fresh air is to your mood when you arrive home to your loved ones.

Boost Your Immune System

Many clients have been struck down more than once with the dreadful cold and flu about. Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils have been used for centuries to heal all manner of ills. 2 world respected essential oil experts are visiting Brisbane this week. Friday at Stones Corner and Saturday on the Gold Coast. For more information about venue and times click here

Recently I started to sneeze and get stuffed up in the head. Immediately headed to my Family Physician kit and got  “On Guard” oil – an “antibiotic – like” combination of therapeutic grade certified pure essential oils. I placed 1 drop under my tongue and within seconds my sneezing and blocked nose was relieved. I continued to do this when needed for several days and then applied “Breathe“  to my throat when I had the first sign of a  sore throat and cough.

I remained well while those around me crumbled. I believe the oils made all the difference. I have diffused them in the clinic all this month to keep well with great effect.

If you would like to obtain some of these wonderful oils to boost your immune system, give me a call on 0429 030 111 or send an email to info@bodyandspinealign.com.au

MindBodySpirit Festival Update

Last month I took the VibroGym machine to the MBS Festival for the 3 days and was overwhelmed by the response to the VibroGym. I now have a new level of respect for the VibroGym and its capabilities. Over 200 people stepped onto the platform to experience the whole body vibration massage, strength and stretch programs. Almost 100% of people come away smiling and completely amazed at how wonderful they felt.

We attracted all sorts of people with combinations of aliments. Some chronic and deeply disturbing pain issues were greatly improved in only 5 minutes of massage and stretching on the VibroGym. Many came back hours later to thank us as they hadn’t felt that good for years. Truly amazing!

I purchased the VibroGym to increase my strength and flexibility and realised the far reaching benefits for nearly everyone. The exercise program only takes 20 minutes and that includes a massage at the beginning and end of each program. NO SWEAT….NO SORE MUSCLES!

And the Winner is…..

Many hopefuls put their name into the box at the MindBodySpirit Festival, to WIN 1 MONTH OF PEROSNAL TRAINING SESSIONS ON THE VIBROGYM. I was overwhelmed by the response to the competition and have not been able to phone everyone who entered. So I apologise if I haven’t called you to announce the winner….

Chrisanthy Varitimos won the prize and will commence her training in August. She is delighted with the opportunity to get her health back on track with the VibroGym. Congratulations Chrisanthy. I look forward to seeing your results.

Half Price ticket offer

Thank you to those who half price tickets through the website and dropped in for a brief chat at the stall. Unfortunately I was swamped with people waiting up to 6 deep, so only had very brief opportunities to say hello. I haven’t forgotten you. Your free gift is still coming. I know, “so is Christmas”. Keep an eye on the post in the next couple of weeks for a treat addressed to you.

Ortho-Bionomy and Scoliosis

The gentle work of Ortho-Bionomy is perfect for assisting those suffering the consistent aches and pains associated with Scoliosis. “Curvature of the spine ” as it is commonly known is found more often in women. About 20% of Scoliosis is thought to be genetically inherited while the other 80% has unknown origins.

Scoliosis often becomes apparent in the teen years and begins to cause pain and discomfort in mid and lower back, shoulders and neck. If you suspect one of your teenagers has scoliosis first look at their shoulders while they stand in front of you. If one shoulder is higher that the other and their hips seem to be slightly off centre, it is worth conducting this little test. Ask them to bend from the hips and fold forward. If a Scoliosis curve is present, you may notice one shoulder blade sticking out further that the other.

Ortho-Bionomy is extremely effective in realigning the spine in a gentle, non-forced way. The “tool kit of exercises” which I teach, provides simple ways to relieve pain and tension and take back control of your spinal health.

Most people find that  only 5-8 visits are needed to achieve a level of competency with the exercise suite so we can begin to remind the spine how to straighten and restore balance.

The results are miraculous! I love working with Scoliosis.  After 14 years of practice, it still brings tears of joy to my eyes when a spine that has been tortured, straightens out so easily. This seems to work with all age groups too. Younger clients find the shifts easier, but the Ortho-Bionomy techniques work to relieve symptoms with all age groups.

Phone Vicki on 0429 030 111 for an appointment or to ask questions about your specific circumstances.

Keep well everyone and I look forward to being of service to assist you and your family to a pain free life and restore  balance.

Blessings

Vicki Tate
